How to Make a Habit of Reading Books

Several times, people set goals for themselves to read certain number of books. But like most of the other goals, it remains unaccomplished. You know that reading books have several benefits. They can make you think beyond your horizons, make you creative, innovative, compute-able and increase your knowledge and focus. However, after reading few pages or so, you get distracted and switch to some other activities. So, if you want to make reading your habit, then you are on the right page. Today, we will discuss about number of different ways to cultivate reading habit in you.

Will and Motivation

First and foremost, thing in making reading your habit is to create motivation in yourself. Unless and until you are not motivated towards it, you cannot achieve any goal. Your willingness and interest matter here. Approach reading as a fun, enjoyable and transformational activity. So, once you make your mindset, you can proceed to the next steps.

Choose Carefully

Selecting a book that you do not enjoy reading or that is difficult to understand, will only waste your time. Continuing such a book, just because you have already started it or just because someone has recommended it would only take you away from your reading habit. So, always try to select a book which you think is interesting to you. Even after reading its 50-60 pages, you feel like it’s not of your choice, leave it and go for another.

Moreover, in the beginning of the month, make a list of books you want to read so that your target would be clearer and more accurate.

Set the Timings

Unless you fix your reading time out of your hectic schedule, you may not be able to take a good start. No matter how much time you allocate, may be 10-15 minutes, but the important thing is to give time for this activity out of 24 hours. And once you decide a specific time, be regular and specific to it. so that, you would be habitual of that timing.

Always Carry a Book

Whether you are going to your school, college, relatives house, outing or elsewhere, always remember to carry your book along with you. Whenever or wherever you get some free time, take out your book and start reading. In this way you will be consistent with your goal and surely, pass a good and effective time.

Borrow Instead of Buying

When you borrow a book from a library or a friend, you had a kind of deadline in your mind. This will work as a push force because deadlines set by other people are great motivators. So, when you get a notification from that particular place, say library, you would target to complete that book as soon as possible.

Quit the Things that are Distracting You

Some distraction like your cell phone, laptop or other electronic gadgets must be kept out of your reach while you are reading a book. This will retain your concentration and increase your interest. Try to create a peaceful, calm quite environment around you while you are reading.

Share your Readings

A great way to get more into this habit is to read to someone else; maybe your parents, friends or kids. Passing on what you have learnt will not only benefit the other person, but it will help you to remember the things you have read. In this way, you will have a reading assignment that helps you stick to your reading habit.

In addition, you can create a blog or social web, where you could share something about the book and thus creating a network to share ideas with people around the globe.

Lastly, if you want to stay motivated to meet your goal, you need to appreciate yourself. Tell yourself that you are making an excellent progress and you will stand still on your goal. So, keep encouraging yourself. If you truly want to build you reading goals and be consistent on this habit, you will need to set up proper plans.
